hi fellow non-drivers,
i have a little dilemma. i do have a driver's license (but am waiting for a replacement card from CA which i then have to exchange for NY license) but i have never been a city driver and only "learned" at age 35 since i grew up in the city. i've also had a couple scary driving experiences. now my boss is pressuring me to drive for work (i'm an environmental educator, another reason NOT to drive). it would be helpful though for work because i have materials i'd need to transport to schools during the winter in order to do programs. but i DON'T WANT TO DRIVE.
any thoughts, suggestions? i could just tell him that i'm not comfortable driving and therefore make myself unavailabe for winter programs (ok by me because i have lots of grant writing to do)... the job after all did not require that i have a driver's license. i DO ride a bicycle when possible. it has a basket but that can only carry so much without messing with my balance...

Re: driving and work
Sun, September 17, 2006 - 9:26 PMCan Mass Transit get you fairly close to work? You may want to consider a folding bicycle along with the subway. -

Fri, September 22, 2006 - 8:28 PMOh and I've been experimenting with a very roomy messenger bag, also.
I love the panniers. They are waterproof.... Also, strapping things onto the top of the rack is good, too.
I mean, depending on what exactly it is that you will be carrying. -

Re: driving and work
Mon, September 25, 2006 - 2:15 PMYour boss cannot legally pressure you to drive. Have you considered quitting, or even alluding that this issue could cause you to quit. What is your bosses great solution? Does it involve you buying a car? Is he willing to provide you a vehicle? If not you will be on the hook for many thousands of dollars.
Perhaps a taxi now and then.... -

Re: driving and work
Mon, September 25, 2006 - 3:31 PMhave your boss pay for your taxis at the end of the month.
alternatively, get reciepts from the cabs (the drivers just love that) and file them as business expenses with your taxes. you get all of that back. It is a bit pricey to have to pay it all up front however. If you can swing it, it means a bigger return at the end of the fiscal year though.
get your boss to pay for it.
then save the receipts and deduct them as well.
double swish! -

Re: driving and work
Tue, September 26, 2006 - 5:02 PMthe double swish sounds a bit illegal, don't you think?
no taxis. this is the parks dept. typical of city agencies, the employees drive.

the double swish (in regards to whatever its context may be at the moment) is almost always illegal.
that's doesn't necisarily make it immoral.
