My name is Janine de Luna-Azul

I'm 9 days short of 41 years old.

I don't and never have owned a car.

Nor do I really like to drive,( I live in Austin where no one else really knows how to drive anyway.)

I don't have a driver's lisense.

I feel better knowing about this tribe.

Thank you.

        Welcome, Janine!

I am a few months past my 42nd birthday and don't even know how to drive! We had no car for me to learn on when I was a teenager, and being on a pre-college track in high school, I took classes like calculus instead of driver's ed.

After I came to San Francisco to go to college I didn't need a car to get around the city, and I had a couple of friends with cars to take me on the occasional road trip. In time I came to realize that the world would be a much better place without personal automobiles. (And most television programming, too, but that's another tribe!)

I am also very concerned about the harm that I might cause to myself and others with two tons of steel moving at 60 miles per hour. People thought 2000 dead Americans in Iraq was front page news, but what about the 40,000 Americans each year that get in their cars and never come home?

Eventually I married a woman who drives, then we had a couple of kids and bought a mini-van, but I am still a white-knuckle passenger who would rather go by bike, bus or train.

The hardest part about not driving is not my inability to transport myself or heavy things around town, but rather the nearly unrelenting pressure to learn to drive from those who think that they know what is best for my kids and me, including my parents, my wife and her mother.

What this country needs is a $10 gallon of gas to finance free mass transit!

          hee hee...
i am a white knuckle passenger too!
I don't see how people do it.
I also am conderned about the harm i would cause to myself and others.
Somebody said somewhere that i must have racked up some kind of good karma for riding a bike for all these years.

I did actually learn how to operate a car and drive it when I was a teenager, and I shared a car with my brother while still a young adult (he was still in high school.) But this was back in the '80's before Austin had become a real traffic war zone. I would love to go shopping for a lot of groceries without having to rely on others, take road trips and go from one end of town to the other without having to rely on the public trans. system here (the buses are not very hygenic among other things.) But I do not trust the other drivers on the road not to vent road rage towards me, nor do I trust myself not to lose control of the car when the pressure is on. Plus the $$ issue is tantamount. I cannot afford to purchase, insure or maintain a car of my own at this time, and frankly I do not think I ever will. Sometimes I don't care, but my friends are beginning to lose patience with me, giving me rides and so on. I try to remain as independent as possible (walking, bussing it, and taking cabs.)
I don't even ride a bike, due to the amount of road hostility towards bike riders here in Austin as well... in spite of the fact that 7 time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong calls Austin his home.

I'm just glad to have some others like me to talk about this issue with, that is why I appreciate this tribes' existance.

I went to visit my brother in Austin last March, and I couldn't believe how crazy those fuckers drove! I'm normally pretty calm as a passenger, but I was going crazy just riding across town on the freeway. And here I thought it was bad in California, where I grew up.

I'm 60 years old and don't drive. Except for a few anxiety ridden times decades ago, I have never driven. I hate it. And yes, I was nagged for years by relatives but have managed to avoid the bullet. Unfortunately I now live in an area that is miles away from a grocery store and the roads are too rough for bikes. Too many logging trucks, etc. Plus, I was never a good biker either. My husband doesn't mind driving or grocery shopping so we get by. I wish horses would come back in style.

    Hello Janine,

    I'm Patrick Alan Coppage.
I'm 53 and I've had a lot of cars. None cost me more than $100. Fix'em-ups each and all. Then I'd sell them for $600 or $700.
Learned to drive on a farm, but moving a tractor around is not really driving, is it? I don't need to drive - I work less than 5 minutes from home, bike-wise, and I do all my shopping locally. If I HAVE to, I'll use public transportation; otherwise it's me and my trusty bike.
FYI - bicycles are THE single most efficient means of transportation mankind has invented!!!

Yes they are, but not when you and your bike are lying flat underneath a gigantic SUV, pickup truck or Hummer,( the most popular types of motor vehicles driven here in Austin, by the most aggressive drivers.)

If you're packin' they tend to give you all the room you need. Mind you, I carry cap gun in my holster and I've been stopped by various law enforcment-type people that let me slide when I tell them why I do it. It's prominently displayed and looks real. However I DO have a carry permit for a concealed weapon which stays locked up.
My idea, Janine, Is watch out for the fools and give them plenty of room. It's a small town. I cross 1 major hi-way. Granted, there are ass-wholes everwhere. Most of my problems arise from the older shits who shouldn't be driving anyway. "I have never been to Spain, but I kinda like the music." (Sorry, I had to.) Or Austin. If you want to see some really bad drivers, go to Maddkin Mountain outside of Huntsville, Ala. Shudders.

Like another poster here, I'm 60, and don't drive. I drove for a little bit when I was 16 until I was about 22(out in a quiet rural area, so I never learned how to drive on the freeway or in urban areas), and then I moved to a large city. Have never owned a car either, and am not planning on it. My husband drives and doesn't mind - he agrees that someone as highly-strung and sensitive as me should NOT drive. Fortunately I'm back in an urban area with excellent public transport as well as many walkable areas(San Francisco). Very happy about that!

hi i'm 32 yrs old soon and don't drive. i learnt how to operate a car at 22 yrs, with the most earnest timidity, in fact i barely left my practise session in all the empty parking lots to actually move onto the road. when i failed my test i never ever drove again. i've forgotten everything now. maybe one day i'll try and learn again or maybe never. not sure if i'm cut out for it, but it seems like a dangerous risky endeavour anyway.
