I'm new to this group, and have joined because I, too, am an adult non-driver.
Let me explain: I was born nearly 47 years ago with a condition known as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, from which I eventually developed Schizophrenia. Because of this condition, I had a bit of a hard time learning to drive when I was in high school in Michigan. I have had a number of learner's permits, but to, unfortunately, no avail, because NO ONE cared enough to "trust" me behind the wheel, and as a result, I was never able to attain a driver's license.
Then, I moved to Florida nine years ago, and found out that it might be even more difficult (if not impossible) to get a driver's license because of my mental condition. And...perhaps to me, that might be a good thing, because IMHO, driving is an expensive and dangerous hassle, a "privilege" I can truly learn to do WITHOUT! In fact, the only driving I REALLY want to do...is in video games! I have an old mountain bike that someone just gave me, and as far as I'm concerned, it's the ONLY set of wheels I'll EVER need.
Don't get me wrong, I still want a license, but what with global warming, soaring gasoline prices and auto insurance premiums, rapidly dwindling global oil supplies, and, of course, ROAD RAGE, I think I just might be better off NOT driving at all, and sticking strictly to bicycles, buses, and taxicabs! What's your take on all of this? Am I REALLY doing the "right thing" by choosing NOT to drive? Surely not EVERYONE is "cut out" to drive a motor vehicle...or are we?
I'm so glad I found this group, and hope you all will welcome me with open arms. ;-)

Re: Greetings from the Sunshine State!
Fri, June 12, 2009 - 6:26 AMYou don't have to learn to drive at all. If you are happy with your bike, bus and taxi's why should you have to change that? -

Re: Greetings from the Sunshine State!
Fri, June 12, 2009 - 11:49 AMThanks, Rob! I could NOT agree with you more. Clearly, driving an automobile is NOT for everyone! Like I said before, the ONLY driving I EVER want to do, is in a video game! Oh, and don't forget, there's still one MORE way for me to get around, which is the oldest, simplest, safest, and cheapest way of all...WALKING!
I believe that everything in life happens for a reason. It's not our privilege to wonder why, but our noble duty to just accept whatever happens, whether bad or good, at least TRY to look on the POSITIVE side of reality, and move on with our lives...knowing that ALL THINGS will fully reveal themselves in heaven's own time, and NOT ours. You know, as much of a "wonderful dream" that driving was to me, I've come to realize something...that, in light of stark worldly reality, some dreams just AREN'T worth chasing! Think about it. -

Mon, July 27, 2009 - 8:08 AMI understand what you mean Sir.
“People are broad-minded. They'll accept the fact that a person can be an alcoholic, a dope fiend, a wife beater and even a newspaperman, but if a man doesn't drive, there's something wrong with him.” -- Art Buchwald -

Re: Greetings from the Sunshine State!
Fri, July 31, 2009 - 5:15 AMWhile I still have you here, I've got a question for you (and anyone else reading this)....I know I asked this question in the group before, but I deleted the topic because the question went largely unanswered. Anyways, my question is this: Do you play video games that simulate driving? And do you think driving games are better or worse than driving a real motor vehicle?
The reason for this question is that I play driving and racing games, both online and off, and it seems to me that virtual driving is just as much fun as real driving, if not even more so. What do you think? Is real driving more fun? Are virtual driving games safer than the real thing? Do video and computer driving games REALLY cause violent aggression, as some experts now think? Let's get some SERIOUS discussion on this matter going, if you don't mind.... ;-) -

Re: Greetings from the Sunshine State!
Thu, August 6, 2009 - 8:52 AMI like arcade driving game, and go-karitng, and bumper cars, etc, etc. I would even drive a speedboat if I had one. I feel all these are safer than driving a car. Hope that answers the question :) -

Re: Greetings from the Sunshine State!
Fri, August 7, 2009 - 1:09 PMAnd, most of these activities do NOT require a license, either! Thanks, Rob! I wonder if anyone else feels the way we do about games and other activities that simulate driving. I for one, do NOT think driving games cause aggression, but are just plain fun. I would LOVE to go go-karting again...I might have done some of that, when I was younger. Now, the only "driving" I have access to, is in video games. One game I recommend, is one called TORCS, The Opensource Racing Car Simulator, which is a fully function racing simulator video game program that is freely downloadable from the web. Just enter "TORCS" into Google, find the website from which you can download the game, download and install it, run it....and enjoy the fun!!! Check it out, sometime, if you can! ;-)

Thu, August 6, 2009 - 8:53 AMYes it is a sad fact, but very true. It also shows how stupid some people can be. LOL :-)
